Hardwood Flooring in Davie and Weston, FL

Choosing The Right Color For Your Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood flooring comes in a variety of nuances, depending on the wood it is created from and on other factors such as light or the color of the protective coat. There are two types of protective finish coat that can be applied on hardwood floors in Broward, Coral Springs, Parkland, Plantation, Sunrise, Weston: oil or varnish.

Hardwood flooring with oil or varnish as top coat?

Choosing between the two depends on the effect you want to obtain with your hardwood floor: are you looking for a glass-like effect that reflects light? Then choose varnish. Do you want to highlight the wood’s texture and obtain a discreet floor? Then oiled hardwood floor is for you.

Now, let’s talk a bit about colors. As you know by now, there aren’t a lot of colors to choose from. Since hardwood flooring is manufactured from real wood, the color palette is brought down to shades of brown, light yellows, or dark purples & reds. But the good news is, these shades are enough to decorate your home.

Here is some advice to help you choose a brighter or a darker shade of hardwood floor:

1.      Choose a darker color if…

There are two rules that dictate whether you can go with a dark colored hardwood floors:

  • One, the room must receive a lot of natural light from the sun
  • Two, the room’s walls must be painted in a contrasting, light color

We could add a third rule that targets house cleaning and maintenance: you have to be willing to wipe the floors with a clean cloth every other day. On dark floors that are installed in rooms full of light, even the tiniest of lint will be easily spotted.

2.      Choose hardwood floor in light colors if…

Light colors are recommended to most people because they can be installed in dark rooms and you can paint your walls whatever color you like. In this case, the hardwood floor is no longer the main character in the room, so you can use interior design tricks to draw attention to other elements: sofas, tables, paintings, etc.

All in all, you won’t be able to come to a final decision until you ask the advice of someone who lives, eats and breathes this industry.
